He waited, sitting cross-legged on the padded

  • He waited, sitting cross-legged on the padded floor and staring at the white walls of silence. He had been doing so for an hour now, it was what he was told to do...
  • and he always did what he was told to do. Unless of course, it conflicted with what someone else told him to do, then, of course, he would self-destruct. The blank walls and silenc
  • e soothed him. Stillness and quietude were things he needed at that moment. However he also needed the contents of the tray brought to his room. "Gregor, it's time for your
  • molting. Eat this pill." Gregor scurried under the bed and hid. I didn't bother ttrying to coax or coerse. I knew once I closed the door
  • Gregor would emerge to listen to his sister play her violin. I didn't even know bugs had ears, but hey, the more you know. I waited by the door for him to scurry out, but
  • the door wouldn't budge. The door was huge, wrapped in cobwebs. It had brass figures of demons all over it. Black smoke spilled from behind the door in vicious clouds.
  • The vicious black smoky clouds formed an ethereal veil in front of the door. The brass demons materialised from the veil and formed a barrier in front of the ancient oak door.
  • They said I wasn't going anywhere. "What about my job?", I stammered. "We will go there for you, " one demon said. This was five months ago! I still have my job, knock on wood.
  • I knew I was fooling myself because with the demons there I had no idea what was real and what was new. It was some misguided defense mechanism that insisted I hold on to my job.
  • So I said nothing, and I kept my job, and the demons took over the planet because no-one objected. But was it my fault? Was it? I didn't make them do it. I was only doing my job.

Blind obedience leads you to a cobweby door guarded by brass demons and if you don't force your way in then...
