  • Carlotta Widdershins looked around at the old farmhouse from which she had evicted her troublesome goody-goody sister. "Good," she thought. But the gloom in the northwest corner r
  • eminded her of Amanda. She put thoughts of her sister out of her head, as she took comfort in the fact that Amanda was far away, in a diner in a desert, which was in Mexico.
  • Would she see her again?
  • She did, 30 years later, at the supermarket. At first, she wasn't sure it was her, she'd gained so much weight. Their eyes met across the display of kumquats. Yes, it was her!
  • She reminisced about their candle-lit picnics with cantelope, nights to remember that seemed long gone now. Just as the smell of the fresh fruit grew, she realized it was actually
  • a cardboard banana-shaped car air freshener jogging her ersatz happy memories with its chemical fragrance. Driving along the M1 approaching Leicester, the white knuckles of her han
  • solo dashboard figurine distracted her for a moment. Then she woke up in hospital. She first noticed her banana odor phobia when an orderly brought in her lunch. The smell of the
  • orderly's armpit banana tatoo, exposed as he raised his arm to adjust her IV, scarred her for life. No more will the aroma of fresh banana bread spur an orgasm. No more pet monkey.
  • The cappucchin had to find a new place. He was taken by Madame Dujardin and hired as a gardener.bhe loved his new life. Who would have imagined this? There were heirloom tomatoes
  • and ten kinds of peas. That little white-faced monkey spent the rest of his days watering carrots and fertilizing sunflowers, and for every arugula-weeding moment , he was happy.

To match " the M1 approaching Leicester" I cleverly used the British "in hospital" but missed "odour."

'In hospital' is British? Now I didn't know that. Where do you wake up in after a car crash in America?
