Yeah, we WISH it was the advertising they censored, but how else are intellectual pursuits and schools going to get revenue?

  2. inatick Dec 17 2012 @ 01:28

    Tax

"The Sims 7" will replace the black box with adverts to crossfinance virtual public schools.

@inatick Zing! @SlimWhitman That way they won't have to worry about all the asbestos and such in the deathtraps they have now. Just slow internet connection speed, internet service dropouts, and ISPs not delivering what people pay for altogether.

Some schools in remote parts operate by radio and Internet. Not quite the Sims world but the students don't have to travel to class.

That way parents can limit the external forces trying to poison their children with freakish ideas about the world outside the front door. But that's one way of looking at it.

  7. inatick Dec 17 2012 @ 13:48

Well yes those exist but I am referring to the children who live in places where they only get mail once a week or two weeks and they get their groceries delivered by air with the mail. Internet connection troubles are you still on dial-up?

  8. Zetawilk Dec 17 2012 @ 13:55

Do they serve dial-up anywhere anymore? What was dial-up, 58.8kbs? I know we've been getting slower than that, but then I'm told AT&T U-verse generally sucks for speed, in spite of being given money for their services. The problem with the economy is the arbitrary disrespect of the dollar. But then, that's me being a symbolic interactionist.

  9. inatick Dec 17 2012 @ 14:21

I heard dial-up is still in use. Wikipedia says in 2010 - 6% of US. South Korea that is currently where you'll get the best speeds for residential use. I was getting about 20 meg per sec the other night but it doesn't help me fold stories faster. I will have even faster net in a few months when we get fibre to premises connected with the NBN.

Well, I've never had a speed issue with FoldingStory. I interpret it as being a very low-system-intensive site, which is part of the reason why I love it so--It's very low key (and I don't just mean the gorgeous dark color scheme), it doesn't abuse my system with needing to load a whole lot of nonsense (Twocans is horrendous about this, and it's just a bunch of text as well), and through all of these benefits it provides a highly entertaining and intellectually-stimulating experience.

Yes too many sites use flash or are just badly designed. Is there a way I can change the date format for my account preferences because I hate the backwards date it is confusing?

  12. Zetawilk Dec 17 2012 @ 15:30

Yeah, I can see that. Computer files are generally organized from left to right, so having the year first would make it more organized. I don't know how significant a change that would be for the site, though. I don't think we can. It feels a bit cosmetic to me.

  13. inatick Dec 17 2012 @ 18:53

Hmm I think you mean code not files but it shouldn't be difficult for the software to support localisation. Yes you are right about it being more organised see ISO 8601 for more info on the standard convention.

FYI, we just pushed out an update that allows you to view dates on the site as DD/MM/YY if you want. You can access the preference here: https://foldingstory.com/account/preferences/">https://foldingstory.com/account/preferences/. Cheers.
