I looked up transom & it said it was something to do with a boat. But now I'm not so sure.

I did not know, lucielucie, but I see a transom *is* a part of a boat. I was thinking of a transom window (here's a pic: http://www.huntllc.com/blog/what-is-the-purpose-of-a-transom-window.html) which I remember from grade school in southern California. Everybody looked forward to the chance to be the window monitor cuz you got to open the 12 or so windows around the classroom by using a long pole with a hook on the end to grab the little metal loop at the top of the window and pull it down to open.
